Education & Credentials
Dr. Heather Miles began her career in Psychology as an undergraduate at her dream college, UCLA. During the summers she worked with children at day camps, priming her for decades of work with children of all ages. Upon graduating, she began work as an assistant in a Kindergarten classroom at a local private school, compelling her to become a District Intern with the Los Angeles Unified School District, earning her own kindergarten and first grade calssrooms for the next five years. It was not long before she realized that, despite her best efforts, she was continually not meeting the needs of about 20% of her students, those in the lowest and highest 10%. These students needed extra support and this realization led her to the Masters in Psychology at Cal State LA, where she earned her School Psychologist credential, and worked for the next 14 years assessing students for special education services and providing support to staff working with students who had a variety of emotional and educational needs. Eventually this led to an Administrative credential and the roles of an Elementary School Assistant Principal and Special Education Specialist, supporting special eduction programs at more than 50 different school sites.
One day at dinner, while talking with her children about what they wanted to be when they grew up, they asked her what she had wanted to be when she was their age. Without hesitation she stated she wanted to be a child psychologist, but that life had given her a bit of a detour. With the naivete of childhood, her daughter told her that she could still achieve this. Wanting to set an example of herself being a lifelong learner, she continued her journey, earning her Doctorate in Psychology. Her passion for connecting with families in need of resources, education, and support led her to open Any Child Can Learn, where she quickly learned that her expertise did not end at the high school level, but was also needed to support individuals in college and in the career world. Her latest endeavor led her back to her undergraduate alma mater, UCLA, where she is working to find ways to support college and career success by earning her College Counseling Certificate.
